Oscar winner carey mulligan returns to television as pregnant di kip glaspie in this gripping new bbc drama from critically acclaimed writer david hare. Set in south london, a young syrian refugee,  abdullah asif sam otto, is shot dead whilst delivering a pizza to karen mars billy piper single mum and  ex wife of  labour politician david marrs john simm in hope of over taking the tory's in upcoming elections. Di kip glaspie, the detective put in charge of the inquiry, soon establishes the suspicious and inexplicable conditions that led to abduls murder. The manager of the pizza delivery shop, laurie stone played by hayley squires who won best actress and best newcomer for her role in ken loache's palme d'or winning film i daniel blake,  replaced the usual driver, mikey gowans brian vernel with the syrian refugee, ultimately sending him to his death. With the press already manipulating the story into a muslim hate crime, glaspie and  her partner ds nathan bilk  nathanial martello white couldn't have ideas further from that theory as they quickly realise this was a job of a professional killer leaving the questions 'was abdualla the intended victim?' and 'if so, why would anyone want to kill him?' this 4 part set politically charged mini series is a high energy intense watch from the opening scenes and over the next 3 episodes follows the consecutive days after abdullah's murder.     the drama features a fantastic cast including nicola walker, mark umbers, kae alexander, orla brady, shawn dixon, july namir, ahd kamil, jeany sparl, saskia reeves and kim medcalf.   what the press said   carey mulligan shines in a damaging political drama.  david hare's state of the nation drama might start out like law order southwark victims unit but it turns into a lucid meditation on contemporary briton    6 stars the guardian   includes subtitles for the hard of hearing.
