Meryl streep stars as laura reimuller, whose son robbie begins suffering from epileptic fits. As the fits worsen, doctors test various dangerous drugs on robbie, who becomes disruptive and mentally retarded. Laura conducts her own research, and discovers a special diet which may cure her son. She has to take on the medical establishment and battle for robbie's right to try out the miracle cure.
