A splendidly original british musical, an update of the strauss opera die fledermaus set in postwar vienna, though clearly based at elstree studios, with a marvellous international cast obviously enjoying itself under co directors michael powell and emeric pressburger. Michael redgrave and ludmilla tcherina are the stars, with support from anton walbrook, reprising his la ronde persona, and mel ferrer, and if you watch closely you might spot director john schlesinger in uniform in a jeep. In its day, this went out in an unheralded double bill with film noir classic the big combo. Release date  13th may 2019
