Back to the future's christopher lloyd stars in this touching drama about two outcasts who dream of escaping to a better life.   abner christopher lloyd is a reclusive and grumpy old widower living in a small coastal town. Alienating himself from his worried daughter katherine kaczmarek and withdrawn from the tight knit community, he spends his days building a sailboat in his garden, with dreams of escape. When he comes across 9 year old orphaned foster child rick hiding on his property, the old sea captain reluctantly agrees to help protect the young, lonely boy from a gang of local bullies on one condition that he helps him finish his half built boat. Both have reached a turning point in their lives. Abner's daughter wants to move him into a senior's residence, a garbage dump for old trash according to abner, while rick's uncle plans to send him to a children's home. The pair gradually form an unlikely friendship, as the boat becomes their shared goal and one chance of freedom from the seaside village that harbours their misery.
